Alessandro “Charuto” is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Carlos “Portugues” Vieira, he is also one of the main coaches of the Cia Paulista academy in Brasilia (capital of Brazil). “Charuto” is a decorated competitor of his own merit having medalled in important tournaments such as the Brazilian National Championship, the Pan American, the European Open and many others.

Nickname: “Charuto” means cigar, it is a name that has been with him since childhood, though it is not clear why he is called cigar.

Alessandro da Silva “Charuto” Biography
Alessandro da Silva was born in Brasília, Brazil on the 22nd of June, 1979. “Charuto” started getting interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because of the rising popularity of Vale-Tudo, in fact, his first BJJ instructor was none other then Vale Tudo icon Euclides Pereira. Though his initial interest in Jiu Jitsu had in mind a possible transition to MMA, he ended liking the kimono work and stayed in the sport.
Charuto also worked with Athaíde Junior, earning his blue and purple belts from the team constrictor master. Alessandro Charuto then moved to the Cia Paulista team, working under master Carlos Vieira’s guidance, earning his brown and black (2003) belts under the famous “Portugues”. When Carlos Vieira left Brasilia to set up a Cia Paulista academy abroad, it was “Charuto” who took over the team, becoming the head instructor there.
