Jeff Glover’s Deep Half Guard DVD review

Jeff Glover is one of the most popular American born fighters in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu today. A black belt under Franjinha Miller, Glover has accomplished many important titles as a competitor being the No Gi World title in 2007 his greatest achievement to this date as a black belt. In 2009 Jeff opened up and decided to share with the world some of the techniques that make him so successful on the mats and show also a few of his exquisite training methods on the extras section of the Jeff Glover’s Deep Half Guard DVD.

The Highs

With many useful techniques, this DVD can open up a whole new game to those who are not used to this style of half guard. Jeff Glover keeps it simple and entertaining not showing too many techniques, which oddly enough is a plus, as he managed to keep my full attention throughout the full set (that is 232minutes), something different from most BJJ instructionals out there. He covers a lot of ground, from how to engage in the deep halfguard to a wide range of techniques, that cover the more basic stuff and the advanced, always with a sprinkle of Glovers unique approach.

Another amazing material on this DVD is the bonus section, the stability ball routine is a fantastic addition to anyone’s specific training routine (novice or advanced), you also have a total of 10 fight videos where you can watch Jeff Glover use some of his techniques against top level competition (that’s right boys and girls, the man talks the talk and walks the walk).

The lows

The details; as a long time user of the Half Guard and Deep Half Guard myself, I felt that Jeff often missed out on a few little details that might make a difference in a fight. These are easily spotted by an experienced grappler but might be missed by the novice. I would also skip passed most of the leg lock attacks on the DVD, though very creative they will be of low percentage of success to anyone that tries to pull them off in my modest opinion.

The veredict

His success on and off the mats is owed to his competitive yet playful personality and his unique style of grappling and this is successfully transpired to this DVD. The techniques are creative but for the most part very applicable. I have to say that shortly after I saw the DVD I managed to pull off a couple of the sweeps in practice against an advanced BJJer, so for me it worked a treat!
