Alex Liscano is a professional grappler and a jiu-jitsu black belt under Sebastian Lalli, who gained notoriety while representing the Checkmat Team in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) global circuit, where he conquered numerous important medals. Alex Liscano Biography

Alex Liscano was born in February 2003 in Tramandaí, a coastal city in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, though he moved to the neighboring city of São Leopoldo as a child, where he spent his formative years.

Age 9, Liscano found himself being bullied at school for being overweight. Following the advice of a friend of the family, Alex was enrolled in a judo club under the guidance of André Lisboa, intending to lose weight and learn how to defend himself. He became obsessed with training and spent most of his spare time at the club, mostly doing judo but also other activities such as jiu-jitsu (mostly to improve his ground game for judo).

A couple of years into his training, Alex broke his arm from a judo throw. The negative experience led him to abandon the thought of grappling. After his recovery, he started practicing kickboxing for a few months, later gaining the courage to join a jiu-jitsu class where he discovered he was allowed to pull guard in BJJ, a rule that negated his woes of being thrown. This discovery made him decide to pursue grappling once again.

It was 2016 when Alex restarted his grappling aspirations under the guidance of Alex Tchaka and Michael Maia. The following year, Liscano conquered the Brazilian Nationals in the orange belt division, the biggest tournament in the country. This victory had the young gaúcho believing in his talent and a future in the sport. To help him achieve his goals, Alex switched to a bigger team, Alliance, where his training was guided by Moacir Mendes Jr. and Mario Reis, where he stayed until his blue belt.

Alex’s search for the best environment to reach his full potential led him to Sebastian Lalli of Team Checkmat, where he arrived as a blue belt. It was there, in Curitiba, that Liscano’s career truly developed to the next level, earning medals at the highest strata of the colored belt division, including a World title in 2025. Alex Liscano earned his black belt from Lalli on May 31 2025.
