Thiago Ortiz is an Australian grappler and a black belt under Edson Ortiz (Thiago’s father), who represents the Ortiz Martial Arts Academy in the sport’s global circuit. Thiago first made waves in the sport after winning a silver medal at the Abu Dhabi World Pro as a brown belt (2024) and gained notoriety as a black belt while competing in the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) for his entertaining and competent style of competing.

Thiago Ortiz Biography

Thiago Ortiz was born in October 2004 in Mona Vale, Australia, and raised in the neighboring suburb of Newport, although his parents are South American (Brazilian father and an Argentinian mother).

Playing and competing in sports became part of Ortiz’s life from the get go, both BJJ nd Chess, which he started at age 4 and practiced actively for 13 years, reaching a 2nd place at a state level in 2016. He would eventually abandon the game due to a lack of support for this activity in high school.

As aforementioned, sports were a big part of Thiago’s daily routine, a lifestyle instilled by his father, Edson Ortiz. It was also through his dad’s influence that jiu-jitsu became a regular family activity. Edson was a purple belt when he started coaching Thiago in 2009 at a gym he, himself, founded, the Ortiz Martial Arts Academy.

Edson Ortiz ran his martial arts gym as a colored belt and learned on his own, by studying from DVDs and books, with his promotions being formalities by an IBJJF-accredited black belt, Paulo Sergio; nevertheless, he was able to develop one of the top Australian athletes, Thiago.

Thiago Ortiz received all his belts from his father, Edson Ortiz, including his black belt. A promotion that took place in June, 2025.
