Ághata Fernandes Biography
Aghata Adriane Rabelo Fernandes was born in April 2002 in Curitiba, Brazil.
Bored during her school’s Summer holidays, 9-year-old Aghata decided to give jiu-jitsu a try, and, by her admission, it became “love at first sight”. Words Fernandes used in an interview with BJJ Heroes in July 2025.
Aghata’s first instructor was Jason Golden, the coach at a Checkmat Team affiliate gym in her hometown. Golden promoted the young Parana native across all kids’ belts as well as adult blue and purple ranks.
Although she had been successful in competition throughout her kids’ and juvenile career, Aghata didn’t truly plan to become a professional grappler until she entered the purple belt division. After two years in this category, Fernandes decided to focus fully on the sport and canceled her university studies to pursue a career in it. To help reach her goals, Aghata opted to switch camps and move to the Checkmat headquarters in Parana, with coach Sebastian Lalli.
Sebastian Lalli helped Aghata Fernandes progress from the purple belt stages, guiding her through to the brown and black belt promotions, the latter of which took place after the IBJJF World Championship in June 2025.
