Tamara Toros Biography
Tamara Toros was born in October 2004 in Budapest, Hungary, where she spent her formative years.
Growing up, Tamara was an avid sports player. Although she competed in an array of activities, she dedicated herself mostly to Rhythmic Gymnastics, under the guidance of Zsuzsa Muszil, from ages 7-9. After Gymnastics, Toros competed extensively in Athletics, representing her school (British International School) in the national circuit up until her early teens.
In March 2018, Tamara’s uncle, a BJJ brown belt at the time, invited her to try jiu-jitsu as a new sporting activity. Toros accepted and immediately fell in love with the sport. This led her to leave Athletics behind to focus her energy on grappling.
Tamara Toros started her relationship with jiu-jitsu under the instruction of a Hungarian instructor named Szkeres Àkos, at the time, an affiliate of Max Carvalho and ZR Team. Toros went from white to orange belt with coach Àkos.
As a 15yo, Tamara decided to become a professional jiu-jitsu player. With the support of her parents, Toros moved to Barcelona, Spain, where she became a student of Gustavo Galvão at the Atos team affiliate in Catalonia. She opted for coach Gustavo due to the extensive history of the Galvão family in the sport, as explained in an interview with BJJ Heroes in 2024.
Arriving at Barcelona as an orange belt, Tamara quickly became one of Europe’s top prospects, particularly in the AJP circuit. She went on to receive her blue belt all the way to black belt from Gustavo Galvão. The latter on July 12, 2025, after 7 years of training. Tamara was also made a partner in the Atos – Barcelona gym earlier that year.
NOTE REGARDING TAMARA TOROS’ RECORD
Traditionally, BJJ Heroes only accounted for black belt records as they signify an athlete’s entry into our sport’s elite ranks. Toros, however, competed extensively in the AJP circuit as a brown belt, a league that combines the female brown and black belt divisions. This has left BJJ Heroes with a delicate predicament of defining when to start accounting for the young prodigy’s match records.
Considering how well Tamara Toros did in this AJP category as a brown belt, reaching the final of the AJP’s most important event (World Pro) and the several important medals she conquered while competing against some of the top-ranked athletes at the time, we have decided to add these matches. Our readers should keep in mind, when addressing Tamara’s career, that her true black belt professional record starts midway through 2025.
