Luiza Monteiro Biography

Luiza Monteiro was born on November 21, 1988, in the historical city of Salvador – Bahia, in Brazil, moving to Niterói (state of Rio de Janeiro) when she was a toddler.

Martial arts appeared in Luiza’s life for the first time through Thai boxing (Muay Thai), a style she started practicing at the age of 12, later, when she was around 13/14 years old, Monteiro was invited by a school friend to visit her jiu-jitsu academy and try a class. Luiza immediately felt a great connection with grappling and joined the Equipe Luiz Paulo team, being taught by coach Junior Duarte, who graded Luiza with her blue belt.

Luiza Monteiro’s training tutoring was varied from the early stages of her sporting career, having trained with many different coaches within the Brasa + Checkmat team, from “Fabrício Bicudo” Medeiros (who awarded her,her purple belt) to Lucas Leite and Leo Vieira (gave Luiza her brown belt) as well as Rodrigo Cavaca. Cavaca would honor Monteiro with the black belt in December 2010, after a series of fantastic results at brown belt, medalling at the Pan American and World Championship in mixed black and brown belt divisions.

In 2011 Luiza Monteiro joined PSLPB team, a project with which she had become involved in her trips to São Paulo. The stint spent at Cicero Costha‘s academy coincided with a great period in her sporting career, where she gathered numerous medals in some of the sport’s most important tournaments.

Having met and befriended the faces behind the Unity BJJ academy in New York City, in late 2014 Luiza Monteiro was invited to be part of the coaches roster. She remained in NYC for 4 months but returned to São Paulo to work with her instructor Cícero ahead of the IBJJF calendar. Her training paid off with 2 important back to back wins, first at the Brasileiro (Nationals) and later at the 20th World Championship.

Luiza would move to San Diego, California, on January 2018, then joining the local Atos Headquarters Academy, a gym led by André and Angelica Galvão.
