Rubens Charles “Cobrinha”

Rubens Charles, also known as “Cobrinha” – Little Snake – is a 5 time World Jiu Jitsu Champion with the longuest reign in the featherweigh division’s history. This Brazilian competitor from the town of Londrina, is famed for his agressive game inside the matted arena, but he is also an acomplished instructor as he has shown teaching at Team Alliance’s HQ in Atlanta.

Sergio Moraes

A member of the reality show, The Ultimate Fighter – Brazil (2012),Sergio Moraes is an accomplished MMA fighter and BJJ black belt with 4 world jiu jitsu titles to his name. He was revealed to jiu jitsu’s main stream at the 2008 World Championships after his submission victory over fan favourite Kron Gracie, he would later win that same tournament. Serginho Moraes has since then cemented his name as one of the great Jiu Jitsu fighters of his generation with several other important titles in the Jiu Jitsu competitive circuit.

Demian Maia

Demian is one of the top MMA fighters in the UFC today. He is also an incredible Jiu Jitsu fighter, a World Cup Champion and a Black belt from one of the best instructors in the business. This article explains his background and his path in the competitive world of martial arts.

Ricardo Arona

Ricardo Arona is a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt from Ricardo Libório and Carlson Gracie lineage, Arona is also a submission wrestling legend, having won the ADCC (the world’s most prestigious grappling tournament) on 3 occasions, he has also led a successful MMA career (Mixed Martial Arts fighter) having fought some the biggest names of the sport in his time, fighters such as Fedor Emilianenko, Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio “Shogun”, Murilo “Ninja”, amongst many others in the now extinct Pride FC promotion.

Jean Jacques Machado

One of the legends of the sport, this BJJ Black Belt has competed and won against the very best fighters of his time. Today he resides in the United States and is an Instructor in the famous Machado Jiu Jitsu Academy

Fernando Pontes “Margarida”

Fernando Pontes, mostly known as Margarida by the Jiu Jitsu community, is a former World BJJ Champion in both his weight category and the open weight division. His entertaining and aggressive style made him one of the most venerated grapplers in the early 2000s as well as his irreverence in and out of the mats.

Alexandre Ribeiro

Alexandre “Xande” Ribeiro is a 6x world Jiu Jitsu champion from the Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu camp. Having been taught by some of the best coaches such as Royler Gracie and Vini Aieta as well as Xande’s own brother, the legendary Saulo Ribeiro. Xande Ribeiro (who is ranked #1 on BJJ Heroes’ Top 10 BJJ Fighters of All Time) also joined MMA in 2008 premiering in Japan’s organization Sengoku.

Andre Pederneiras

Andre Pederneiras also known as Dede is one of the best Jiu Jitsu and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) coaches in the world. The leader and co-founder of the Nova Uniao academy,”Dedé” was voted as “Best MMA Coach” in the world on October 2010 by the renowned PVT magazine (Portal do Vale Tudo) in a referendum made between fighters, coaches and journalists of the sport.

Rickson Gracie

Considered by many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu figures such as Ricardo Arona, Demian Maia, Paulo Filho (and many others) as the greatest BJJ practitioner of all time, Rickson Gracie, is the son of Helio Gracie. Through several “Vale-Tudo” fights in his native Brazil and in Japan, Rickson Gracie helped put his family’s trade (Gracie Jiu Jitsu/BJJ) on the map as a legitimate and well known fighting style.

Renzo Gracie

One of the true martial arts legends, Renzo Gracie is a Jiu Jitsu black belt from the famous Gracie family who became also one of the pioneers of MMA. A fantastic coach that has produced several renowned black belts, Renzo primarily excelled as a competitor in the 1990’s winning important tournaments such as the ADCC (Abu Dabhi Combat Club) and several MMA fights in Japan, Brazil and US.

Master Helio Gracie

Helio Gracie is arguably the most important figure in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. One of the first Gracie Jiu Jitsu representative in the 1930’s and 1940’s he is also the father and master of many fighters who carried the name of BJJ to Martial Arts main stream in the early 1990’s, such as Royler, Rickson and Royce Gracie. His lineage and legacy is one of the strongest in Jiu Jitsu and he is seen as one of the fathers of the Brazilian grappling art.

Carlos Gracie Sr.

Carlos Gracie was the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, the ruling figure of the Gracie family as well as a successful entrepreneur. He reached the “Decimo Grau” 10th Dan in Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (AKA BJJ/Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) a degree only given to the founders of the gentle art.

Rolls Gracie

Rolls Gracie was one of the most important members of the Gracie family, being the family’s champion in the 1970’s and considered to be the father of modern day jiu jitsu through his ideas on cross training in different martial arts. Rolls is also often labelled as the pioneer in the development of the game, having influenced most of his and all following generations of BJJ practitioners.

Carlson Gracie

Carlson Gracie was one of the most important figures in jiu jitsu, and still is considered today to be one of the best representatives of the sport both as a competitor and as coach through his Carlson Gracie Academy. His legacy will live for many years to come, as many of the world’s premiere BJJ teams came generated from his lineage, teams such as Nova Uniao, American Top Team (ATT), Brazilian Top Team (BTT), Nova Geração and many others.
