Francisco Eduardo Alves Costa, commonly known as Eduardo Alves, is a professional jiu-jitsu player and a black belt under Michael Langhi, who first made waves in the sport in the colored belt divisions, while representing the Alliance Academy. Eduardo Alves was particularly successful in the Gi ruleset of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) circuit, where he was one gold medal away from conquering the brown belt IBJJF Grand Slam in 2025.

Eduardo Alves Biography

Eduardo Alves was born in April 2002 in the city of Piripiri, Piauí, Brazil.

Back in 2016, Eduardo (13) decided to try a jiu-jitsu class, influenced by his cousin, who already trained in this sport/martial art. It was this relative who presented Alves to coach Ronaldo Araújo at the Quartel General da Luta (QG da Luta), where he began his career.

Although besotted by jiu-jitsu and competition from the get-go, Eduardo faced the hard reality of being a working-class citizen in a sport removed from real financial incentives. He worked in the delivery industry to support his BJJ goals, but was unable to earn enough to compete in the bigger national tournaments such as the Brazilian Nationals. That changed when he was accepted by the Alliance Team’s professional squad (Instituto Alliance) in São Paulo.

Eduardo arrived at the Instituto Alliance as a blue belt, where his instruction was taken over by Michael Langhi, the head instructor, who promoted him through all belts from then on, including his black belt promotion, which was awarded in June 2025, on the same day when Alves conquered double gold at the IBJJF World Championship in the brown belt division.
