JUNE 1, 2026, LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA, USA, was the time and place for the 30th edition of our sport ‘s most prestigious event, the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, organized by the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation). A yearly tournament set to bring out the best Gi player on the planet.
This was one of the most turbulent years for our sport, with accusations of misconduct by some of the most well-known figures in the game and the consequences that resulted from all of it, but this week, all that mattered were the mats and the game at play. In this article, we will discuss the elite of the show, the adult black belt division.
We would argue the biggest winner of the 30th World Championship was Diego Oliveira, commonly known as Pato. The Manauara broke all the records this year by becoming the winningest light featherweight in the history of the sport, surpassing the high mark set by his coach, Guilherme Mendes (as well as Robson Moura) of 4 world titles. In Pato ‘s 5th gold medal at the Mundial, the AOJ athlete looked unstoppable in his matches, 3 of which he won by submission, and the final with a very hefty 9×0 score. In the female division, #8 seed Sabrina Gondim was on fire. Going down in weight from his previous attempts at Mundial gold, the Fight Sports athlete kept true to her style of defense, strategy, and a very tough base to sweep to conquer gold, forcing two big upsets in the process wich included a win over the division ‘s #1 seed Mia Funegra as well as former world champ Gabi McComb in the final, passing the guards of both athletes on her way to the top.

When it comes to quick statistics, the 2026 IBJJF World Championship ‘s adult black belt division provided 335 matches, 234 male bouts, and 101 female ones, resulting in 115 wins by submission. 34% submission rate both in male and female divisions, though the female weight classes were more reliant on finishes from the bottom than their male counterparts. Furthermore, we saw a small number of successful lower-limb attacks in the men ‘s weight classes, with only 3 Straight Ankle Locks and 4 Toe Holds, a different statistic from the female weight classes.
