AJ Scales Biography

Anthony Scales was born on April 1st, 1976 in Regina, Saskatchewan – Canada. He started practicing martial arts as a teenager, by training Kickboxing, though that was short-lived. He also practiced Judo where he achieved a green belt.

In 1999 however, he found his true calling, in Jiu Jitsu. After watching one of the early UFC’s he decided to take the Brazilian martial art at a local club where he trained for a while, obtaining his blue belt there. After that he moved teams, to Nova Uniao, to be taught under Wagnney Fabiano (former WEC fighter and brother of grappling extraordinaire Leo Santos).

AJ received his purple and brown belts from Fabiano. During this period Anthony travelled extensively to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to train at the Nova Uniao Headquarters there, where he had the chance to train with a few of the “top dogs” in BJJ, fighters like Shaolin Ribeiro, André Marola and many others. Scales also competed in Brazil on several occasions competing at tough competitions such as the World Cup and the Internacional de Seniors e Masters.

On the 4th of February 2008 AJ became another proud member of the BJJ black belt club. His belt was handed by Leonardo Santos though it was awarded by Wagnney Fabiano.

Being a competitor by nature, AJ Scales had to try his luck in MMA. According to Sherdog, Scales has a professional record of 2-0-0 (two wins by submission).
