Wellington “Alemão” Luís

Wellington Luís, commonly known as Wellington “Alemão”, is a Brazilian jiu jitsu black belt under Cicero Costha, and a member of the New School Brotherhood team, an academy that spawned from the Projecto Social Lutando Pelo Bem (PSLPB) camp in October 2015. Alemão made a career competing in the lower belt divisions of the sport, where he became known as one of the best lightweight prospects of his generation, having later settled in the pro-division as a medium-heavyweight.

Full Name: Wellington Luís Sebastião

Nickname: Alemão, meaning German in Portuguese. The name became popular within Wellington’s circle of friends due to his blond hair.

Wellington Luís Biography

Wellington Luís was born on the 24th of January, 1993 in São Paulo – Brazil, neighbourhood of Ipiranga, just a few blocks away from Cicero Costha‘s academy: Projecto Social Lutando Pelo Bem (PSLPB).

At the age of 16, convinced by a few of his friends, Wellington initiated his jiu-jitsu career at Cicero Costha’s academy. Although all of his friends eventually dropped from practice, Wellington persisted and soon realized it was a career he wanted to pursue professionally.

Cicero Costha led Wellington’s training throughout his colored belts career, though always supported by men such as Helio Dias, Leandro Lo, and Thiago Barros.

After a stellar brown belt campaign, where Alemão won the Abu Dhabi World Pro and a silver medal at the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Cicero Costha awarded Wellington his black belt ( July 2015).

By the end of September 2015, a few of PSLPB’s top competitors left the team to form the “Jiu-Jitsu New School Brotherhood”. Included in this group was Leandro Lo, Luiza Monteiro, Helio Dias, Gustavo “Braguinha”, Ygor Schneider, Anderson Lira and Wellington Luís.
